Well here we are. . . Day 25. I know it's a 24 day challenge, but day 25 is the hardest. There are no "rules" to follow. Do you continue with this lifestyle or do you stuff your face and blow up all your hard work? I continue! I continued last year with great success. I was stronger last year. There were no cravings. . . no desire to stuff my face. That's not so true this year. But I'm focused and trying really hard to find that strength I had last year. I can't deny I have cravings and I'm not sure why cause I kicked that during the challenge last year. But here I am. . . as such, for my cravings I made Advocare protein balls, using their meal replacement shake. I've never ever made these in all this time doing Advocare. They turned out a bit dry and I might tweak the recipe next time, but it sure did make me feel like I had a sweet snack last night.
I realized yesterday that I took (and posted to FB) a photo of breakfast, lunch and dinner. Geesh. I don't know what got into me. But this is what I ate - minus the snacks (and yes I snack - often)
A shake for breakfast, tuna "salad" (tuna, pickle relish and eggs) on top a bed of quinoa for lunch and a new recipe - Autumn Minestrone Soup for dinner. All of these were YUM!! When I really eat clean I crave that lunch combo all the time. I don't question it. I just eat it. My snacks were carrots and hummus, strawberries and cashews . . the protein ball after dinner. And handfuls of grapes every now and again. I snack often and a lot. If I get hungry I blow it. Big time.
So the results. . .
I'm down 9.6 pounds.
I don't have a before of the fat %, but it was 32.8. So I'm down only 0.6% in fat. I thought that was a bit on the low side.
As for the inches, I lost a total of 6.5 inches broken down like this:
Chest: -2
Waist: -2
Hips: -2
Thigh: -0.5
Overall I'm pleased with the results. I had hoped for more. And I had hoped to reach 183. Why that number? I was lower last year (in the 170's) when I got sick. I bounced to 181-183 and held there for some time. My body likes that range and I wanted to get back there during the challenge and proceed to get myself over that hump. But I will get there. . . I am motivated.
One thing that motivates me is before and after pics because you can "see" the difference. I'm very suspicious of many before and after photos. I think many are rigged in some way: clothing, camera angle. . . I wear the same clothes, take the photo in the same place in my house and do the same poses.
You probably have to make that bigger to see, but the differences are there. And that's motivating to me for sure!!!!
\
My husband did the challenge with me. He lost 8.2 lbs and 5.5 inches. I can visibly see him shrinking. I guess cause you can always see progress in others before yourself. We are always so critical of ourselves.
I really want to see the 170's and reach a certain hole (that I punched last year) on my belt. So those are my next goals. I felt like I did so much better on the challenge last year but I need to stop downplaying this year's results. I think I struggled more this year regardless of the numbers that resulted. Mentally is was harder and I was discouraged by that. I love the challenge though and I love the Advocare product line. So the goals are within reach! I just gotta get there.
I made this fun collage of some of the food I've eaten over the past 24 days.

Advocare 24 Day Challenge: Phase 1 results
Today is day 11 and the first day of the 14 day phase 2. They call this the max phase. You are no longer cleansing your body, but you are giving it proper nutrition and vitamins. You take quite a few pills in the MNS system. I don't love that, but I do love results. . . .
So what were my results from Phase 1?
-6.6 lbs and -3.5 inches overall!!!
My inches broke down to:
Chest: -1
Waist: -1
Hips: -1
Thigh: -0.5
I'd rather have kept the chest and lost more hips, but such is life.
I didn't get a photo of my fat % monitor on Day 1. (Running late for work as usual) But I was at 32.8 %. I didn't write down the BMI but I imagine it's the same. Oh and that's a high BMI - the freaking bar flashes so I forgot about that and the pic snapped at the wrong time. I wish I was normal BMI, but I'm not.
Yesterday was a bit challenging. We regularly have pizza day at work. We had a few inches of snow and we had severe server issues at work - causing many people to twiddle their thumbs. The boss declared it a pizza day. Ugh. They set up the tables in the hallway just outside my room. The smells. . . oh my the smells! But I was mentally strong and I resisted. I wasn't about to mess up. I am pretty strong on the challenge cause I believe anyone can do anything for 24 days. But the day before I'm going to take phase 1 results?? That means I'm even stronger. I resisted. It's all about choices and eating for your goals.
But man. . . that's a lot of pizza and therefore a lot of pizza smell to resist. . . . I did it! SUCCESS. Eat for your goals! Eat to live, don't live to eat.
I can't wait to have final results in 14 days. My weight has been holding for several days now - even creeping up 0.2 lbs today. So . . . I think my body is resisting. Which means I have to be strong and strict with my food choices. I think I need to cut back on the fruit a little bit. It's my saving grace and replaces my sweets. So a few less handfuls of grapes are in order.

Some fun recipes over the weekend
It was a 3 day weekend this past weekend. Whoop! It was freezing freaking cold without snow. If I have to be that cold it should at least snow. It's suppose to snow today. I believe when I see those beautiful flakes with my very own eyes.
Today is Day 9 of the Advocare 24 Day Challenge. Lots of people can't wait till Day 11 which is the first day of phase 2. I don't understand because I eat the same on all 24 days of the challenge. The Advocare Daily Guide doesn't indicate any differently. Yes I'm an Advocare distributor and if I have one complaint about the whole thing it's the lack of definitive instruction and the way directions are spread through the grapevine. I've heard things that absolutely don't make any sense and some things that are totally scientifically incorrect. So that's my beef, but I love the products and what they have done for me. But I'm pretty dang strict on the challenge. I don't do dairy at all. I avoid all processed carbs - no whole wheat bread for me. Not even Ezekiel bread. No pasta of any kind. No sprinkling of cheese. No yogurt. The carbs I eat the most are fruit, quinoa and sweet potatoes.
So anyways . . . I'm rolling right along and I can't wait to share a scale update on Day 11.
In the meantime we had some fun with recipes this weekend.
First. . . on Saturday we made a soup that we made last year when I did the challenge (my hubby did not) and we loved and freaking forgot about it. We will be making this a lot more often. Here is the link sweet potato, chicken & quinoa soup. YUM! It's a crock pot recipe. Check it out. I'm eating leftovers for lunch today :) It looks better in the blog photos.
We had fish on Sunday and decided to try brussels sprouts again. We like them but struggle to cook them. My friend said to cook at 350 for 20 mins, then 425 for 10 mins. That worked like a charm. And we learned the smaller sprouts are better. The last time we tried I swear our sprouts were the size of golf balls. They weren't very good.
I've heard it's good with pork chops too!
This weekend my hubby and I worked out three days in a row! I took him to the gym with me on Sat and got him a 7 day pass. I think he's going to join. He joined the Y with me years ago and didn't last that long. He had a lame excuse about not liking them withdrawing from his checking. . . umm. . . that's the easy way to pay and whatever. I still don't know how committed he is, but this gym is much cheaper. He says he wants to keep his cardio up. We will see if he signs up once the 7 days is up. And we will see how often he goes if he does sign up. I love that he's trying and seems dedicated now.
I'll be back on Thursday with an update on the results from phase 1. If you are doing the challenge as well - stay strong and rock on! You got this!

Last night we tried a new to us recipe that people doing the challenge are raving about. Hummus Crusted Chicken.
It was really good. There is zucchini, squash and onion under that chicken. We'd change a few things next time. We would butterfly the chicken so the hummus covers more surface area. And we'd cut back on the amount of lemon we left in the pan during baking. If you want to try this recipe here it is.

Stuck
I ended my 10 day cleanse at 181.6. Today I weigh 182.2. I've been bouncing around with my lowest being 181.2 and my highest being 182.6. Ugh! I don't know why I'm stuck other than the 181-183 is an old weight point. My eating has been pretty on track. I've been running. I'm trying to be patient and push through this without really screwing up.
We went to the ballgame on Sat. I didn't have a beer. I had a smoked turkey leg and shared some fries with my husband. No soda. No sugar. I brought some fruit with me. I was so good. I ran 4 miles that morning. . . and still no loss.
Here's my big huge turkey leg. I couldn't even eat it all.
We are going to the game on Memorial Day. I *really* want to hit 30 lbs lost (181.0) before then cause I want a beer and I am not eating another turkey leg. It was good. But it was *so* big I kept imagining what kind of turkey that came from. . . and those thoughts can make me be vegetarian really easily. So I tried not to think of that and just eat. :)
I'm trying to figure out what I can do to get to the 170's. I'm hoping it'll just take time cause I want to keep losing and have a balance in my eating. And I know that when I allow myself other foods that I just maintain and I don't lose. I'm going to push through this week and hopefully hit 181.0 or even see the 170's before Monday. Fingers crossed!

I finally got over the three mile hump and *ran* 4 miles. In the rain. I got rained on all weekend - on both morning runs and during an hour and a half rain delay at the game. I'm over the rain.
My pace was much better than I expected! :) I want to get to where I am doing a 5 mile run regularly on the weekends. I don't know if I'm stuck at the 3 mile mark due to fitness or if it's just mental.

Back to the grind
I'm home! My trip was pretty amazing. Probably cause most of it was free for me. :) London was gorgeous. It was so nice to be in a foreign country that speaks the same language. That makes things so much easier. We didn't have a lot of time to do stuff because we were working M-F but we did finish up and take a half day on Friday. That allowed us to go see Windsor Castle.
I traveled to Belgium to see my friends and meet my little Goddaughter. :)
Living with a baby was quite an experience. The baby rules the house, the life, the daily plans. Whew!
I ate so much yummy food! I was worried about how much weight I would gain. When I got to Belgium I got on my friend's scale. I converted the kg to lb and thought - this scale must be whacked. But imagine my surprise when I got home and saw I only gained 2.6 lbs. Not too shabby for eating an *not* clean diet and eating out most of the time.
I was at my lowest weight this year when I left! I'm kind of sad to say I am 190.0 today. I've gained a whole pound since I've been home. *cry* It's hard to buckle down and get back to the clean eating, but I can do it!
But given the food I've eaten I'm still happy with the fact that I'm within 5 lbs of where I left.
London food: Honeycomb Cream Slice, Spotted Dick, Fish & Chips and Steak and Ale pie.
Belgian food: chicken kebab, food from the frituur, home made videe, and croquette in Holland
Belgian waffle with chocolate sprinkles!

Yesterday. . . continued.
I've thought quite a bit about my post yesterday. I don't feel there is anything wrong with the post. Nor is there anything wrong with me. Maybe it sounds a bit more harsh in black and white than I intended it to be. I feel like these thoughts are common for someone that struggles with weight. They are normal for someone that is constantly on a diet. I will *never* be able to eat without thinking about it. If I do I will be right back up at 250 lbs. Have you been 250 lbs? It sucks. It's not fun. I looked like a blown up balloon. I'm not joking. It's hard for me to lose weight. The thyroid issue is a prominent one. It's not calories in vs calories out. It sucks to eat healthy and workout all the time to only maintain my weight. I work *hard* to not gain weight. Do you have to work so hard to maintain your weight? Until you've been in this position I don't think you can really comprehend what it's like.
That being said, I don't feel like I have an unhealthy relationship with food. I do not starve myself. I do not stuff my face. I do not throw up what I've eaten. Even though the thought of food, calories, carbs, gaining weight is in the forefront of my mind I still eat. If I didn't maybe I'd be thinner! I eat sugar. I eat carbs. I eat fruits. I eat nuts. I eat meat. I eat cheese. I eat. Again I don't eat till I'm sick. But I do eat. And if you hung out with me you would see that I eat normally. You would see that I eat healthier than most people. I can't tell you how many comments I get at work from people that see me eating a salad every day at lunch.
I'm not going to lie, it sucks when I can have a normal day, maybe eating out for one meal, and gain 3+ lbs on the scale overnight. It's depressing that it can take me a WEEK to get that off. Is that a female issue? Is that normal? Maybe. Who the hell knows. I've been tested for food sensitivities. There are several things I should not eat. Though those tests give false positives and negatives so how do I rely on that? Some of the items I don't eat anyways, some I don't eat often. I do not feel like there are other life issues that are causing these thought processes. I feel like this is normal for someone that has been overweight, that is still overweight and that struggles with losing weight. Those of you that are the journey with me. . . do you not wake up and hopefully get on the scale? Do you not hold your breath (even metaphorically speaking) and hope that the number went down? Are you not disappointed when the number goes up? Those of you that are trying to lose weight. . . do you not feel slightly guilty when you eat that cookie that you "shouldn't" eat? Sure you can fit those calories into your day, but don't you feel a tinge of guilt when you eat something that is "bad"? And do you not get mad when you work your ass off and eat right and don't see any results? I don't think I'm alone here.
So I'm going to march forward. . . eating my salad for lunch every day. Drinking a ton of water every day. Continuing on my half marathon training schedule and I'm going to see where I end up.

Battle with the scale
I know numbers aren't everything. However, this is what my scale says to me:
I don't think I should weight 200 lbs. Yes that's what the scale said today. 200 on the nose. I battle the scale. It's not healthy, I know. What I don't know is how to overcome it. I feel like the number I see in the morning dictates my mood through the day. Last week I reached the 199's. But then I bounced up to 201.something. Ugh. I tried to think of the scale as a competition. Me vs the scale. That works when I'm winning. I feel *really* good when the scale does go down. But then when it goes up I get this WTF attitude and tend to eat. I thought I was a tough competitor, but apparently not! I'm scared that if I ever do get back to the 180's (where I was happiest) that even then my favorite jeans won't fit. Why? Well when I was on HCG, I lost all the abnormal fat stores. Ok, not all, but they were reduced. My hips shrank. Losing weight *normally* my hips don't tend to shrink. I think my 20lbs went on in my hips and won't come off in my hips. That makes me sad. Weight loss is so emotional. I ate a chocolate chip muffin this morning. We got off work early yesterday (due to snow) and I baked muffins and cookies. I really wanted to try a muffin. I consciously decided to eat it. I think that there is a healthy balance in life. But then I feel guilty. . . really guilty. Which sometimes prompts me to eat more. So then it's a viscous cycle. I don't think the average healthy weight person understands the emotional struggle. I don't think my own (overweight) husband understands it. On FB last week I posted an article about diet myths. A friend shared it. Then a mutual friend (that is suddenly huge into Advocare) commented on it. She said something about doing what is "proven" to work in regards to weight loss (meaning journaling, etc). I wanted to FB smack her upside the head. I think she weighs like 105 lbs dripping wet. Seriously. I think the only time she's weighed more was during her 2 pregnancies (I didn't know her then). I don't think she has ever struggled with weight loss. But she sells Advocare now and so she knows . .. right? What-freaking-ever! Bite me. I'm sorry but you don't know what it's like. You don't know what it feels like to wear a size 18-20 jeans. You just don't. You don't know what it's like to try on multiple outfits when you go out in order to find the one that makes you look the least fat. You don't know what it's like to think about what you are going to eat next. . . to feel guilty about something you ate. . . to stress over every bite that goes in your mouth. You flat out don't! That's what I wanted to say. Instead I said nothing. I would venture to guess that most people wouldn't look at me and call me "fat". I carry extra weight, but I'm 5'10" and I carry it fairly well. . . but. . . I think I'm fat. I stress over how much weight my horse has to carry. I know for a fact that at one point in my life I should have stopped riding him simply because of my weight. That's depressing. Weight loss is a struggle. It doesn't end. Every day. . . every meal. . . every snack. . . it a battle that you win or lose. I literally stress over everything I eat. Which is ironic cause I can sure binge in the evenings. This battle won't end. I won't reach my happy weight and suddenly just live a happy life there. No. I will have to constantly fight to stay at that weight. And that's depressing. It sucks to look at "naturally" skinny people and watch them eat without a second thought to what they put in their mouths. That's not me. That will never be me. And as much as some people say the understand, unless they've been there they just can't possibly. So I continue to fight the battles. I think I lost this morning with the muffin. However, as long as I don't let that define my day, I consider it a tie.

Effort vs results
In all areas of my life it seems if I put in enough effort I get correlating results. That cannot be said with my battle with the scale. It's quite depressing. I worked hard this week I think the scale creeps up more than down. What is going on?
I've been in such a funk lately. Partly because I'm trying to figure out what is going on in life. Partly because I feel like someone isn't being 100% honest with me. I'm just flat out crabby.
I had a massage yesterday and I'm so sore today. The place I go to is kind full of various practitioners. There's a nutritionist as well. I've thought about checking into her services. Maybe that would help with the scale? But ultimately I haven't. . . yet. I can't decide. She must have had some kind of seminar cause there was a poster board in the waiting room. I've heard the uproar over Mac and Cheese here in the US. The artificial dye that is in our version and is *not* in the European version. Well I snapped this photo:
looks like other products are guilty too. I find this pathetic. What is wrong with the FDA? No wonder we always fail when compared to the health of other countries.
So it's that's time of year: Girl Scout cookie time. And while I'm battling with the scale I'm still ordering some. They can be frozen. I just can't find a suitable substitute for my favorite, so I might as well freeze a few boxes.
I love Savannah Smiles! Lemony yumminess!!!
I ordered 3 of those and 1 trefoil (shortbread - which is also yummy). What I did *not* order was any Samoas or Tagalongs. Why you ask? Well last year I ordered many boxes of cookies and I don't think I got to eat one of them. Turns out I discovered they had been eaten straight out of the freezer in the shop. My husband and I did a 30 day no sweets challenge. At least I think it was 30 days. I don't think he did it with me though. The first weekend he ate birthday cake at his nephew's party. And then I discovered my precious box of tagalongs was being eaten out of the freezer. I discovered the partially empty box after the challenge, but I full believe he was eating them during the challenge. And how would I know? They were in the shop afterall. So this year, screw that. I'm ordering these and he better not freaking touch my cookies!
