5 year anniversary

Yesterday, April 2nd, was our 5 year anniversary.   We talked about going out of town, but time got away from us and we didn't make any plans.

We decided to have a day out locally.  I asked my parents to give Sophie her mid-day medicine so we didn't have to come home.

One thing we wanted to do was run the loop around Forest Park in St Louis.  There are two tracks, one paved and one gravel.  Both are just over 5.5 miles.   I cannot tell you how far we've come in 5 years. . .  neither of us ran back then.  Driving to St Louis to run is not something either of us ever thought that we'd do.   But that's what we did!  It was a windy day (there were wind advisories) and Forest Park has more hills than we have at home.  It was challenging and I walked briefly to get up a hill.  The wind was getting me and affecting my breathing and I was just so done.  But I didn't walk long and I picked it up again and kept going.  Thankfully my husband stayed with me otherwise I'm sure I'd have walked more.  I was kind of thinking "whose idea was this?" and I actually said that at one point near the end.  But soon it was over and we had ran 5.75 miles!   It was actually fun for the most part.  Forest Park is just full of people being active and that's inspiring to keep going.

Forest Park is HUGE at 1,293 acres, it's larger than central park.  It's the 7th largest urban park in the US.  The St Louis zoo is in Forest Park.  So we changed clothes at the visitor center and decided to go to the zoo.  The St Louis zoo is free, but you have to pay to park if you don't park along one of the streets in the park.  We paid to park cause it's more secure and I look at it as a donation to the zoo.  The zoo is really really fabulous and there is often random chatter about charging admission.  I hope they never do.  It's so great that it's free!

We saw the penguins :)  We see them more often than the other animals because the zoo is open during Christmas at nights.  It's called Wild Lights and the penguins are one of the only animals you can see when you go.  Of course you're going mostly for the Christmas light display.

St Louis Zoo just got a Polar Bear named Kali (it's pronounced like Kuli and he's a boy).  I don't think he's been there a year.  He was available to see during Wild Lights this past year but he wasn't too cooperative while we were there.  This time we had *perfect* timing.  We arrived right as they were feeding him.  They toss his fish (?) in the water and he finally jumped in and started eating.  It was so fun to watch such a big bear swim around.  I even took video!

Late we walked by to catch him outside.  He's soooo gorgeous.

I love all things monkey!  So of course we hit that section of the zoo.  This guy was just hanging out. :)

This guy was hanging out on the platform playing with the crowd.  People were nodding their heads and he'd nod too.  He even poked his hand on the window at children.  It was really cool.  I wish I could have got closer, but the crowd was too large.

The St Louis zoo has quite an elephant population.  I love watching them as they are so big and fun to watch walk around.

We rode the train for he first time in years.  It isn't free, but for $8 you get an all day pass and can get on or off wherever you want.  We rode it once all the way around the zoo.  What we didn't know was that the train took you past some elephants that aren't on display to the public.  One of them in the youngest one at the zoo and it was so adorable.  But I didn't have my phone ready to take a photo.

After the zoo we stopped at Ballpark Village for some drinks.  It's across the street from Busch Stadium (the St Louis Cardinals' stadium).  We sat at the outside bar.  It might be April but it was chilly.  We moved near a fire for our last drink. . . it wasn't very crowded so it was really nice to enjoy the place without the normal crowd during baseball season.  The fact that we were wearing Cardinals attire yesterday was a fluke.  :)

The Anheuser Busch emblem above the fire is really old and was originally in a different city near a train track.  We think that's why it's black in some parts.  It's not from the fire below - that's for sure.

On the way home we stopped for dinner at Peel Brewing Company.  We've never been and have wanted to go for some time.  They are known for their wood fired pizzas.  My husband ordered a flight of beer.  I had told the waitress that I wanted the Blood Orange beer on the flight, but she misunderstood me and brought me a full size beer.  Thankfully I liked it.

I was told their Mac & Cheese is fantastic and that was the truth!  We got it as an appetizer.  It was amazing.  Of course we eat pretty low carb and haven't had mac & cheese in forever, so that certainly helped with how impressed we were.  But I really think it was just *that* good.

We ordered the Maple Bourbon Pork pizza.  It was good but the toppings were kind of scarce.  We weren't all that impressed.  Our expectations were really high so that didn't help.  It was good but we aren't anxious to go back any time soon.  We honestly prefer Papa Murphy's take and bake pizza.  I'm not sure if that sad or funny.

We stopped at the grocery store and got some cake for dessert.  I chose this one cause our wedding color was pink. :)   In the past we've ordered small cakes from the bakery that made our wedding cake.  That bakery makes amazing tasting cakes, but this was certainly yummy enough.

And since this was all about our 5th anniversary, here is a photo of our amazing wedding cake.  Not only did it look fantastic, the taste was amazing!!!!!  Everyone commented how good it was - that it wasn't just pretty.  Wedding cake has a reputation of being dry.   Ours actually had filling in most of the layers.  Totally yummy!!!

New PRs and a holiday weekend

This was such a busy weekend and at the same time I felt like I didn't get anything done!

First I got off work on Thursday at 11:30 AM.  We were given 3 hours off and I didn't take a lunch.  I went to the park in town to do 3 miles before going to ride Eli.  It started off amazing and just stayed that way.  It was cool and overcast.  There was  fine mist at the beginning.  Perfect running weather.  Just over halfway through my Garmin beeped that the battery was low.  OMG.  I knew I was on track for my fastest 5K.  I just hoped the battery would last.  Thankfully it did!  I am so tickled with this pace.  It actually felt easy.  Now the rest of my runs this weekend were not like this.  But I'm hoping that I'm onto something and will need to re-evaluate my goals.

Then I went to the barn and I just had a great ride on Eli.  He's 20 now and things haven't been so good.  But he gave me such a great ride.  Great way to start my weekend!

It was a busy week and my 7 day fitbit step total was the highest I think it's ever been on Friday.

114K!  Usually breaking 100K takes some effort or some long runs.

On Friday we had tickets to the Cardinals game.  We were going with my parents and it was their first time at this Busch Stadium.  I believe this is the 3rd Busch Stadium, but I'm not sure.  It opened in 2006.

We had fun!  There were fireworks after the game.  They do such a good job of this and everyone has a great seat.  It's fun to just sit there and wait for the lights to go off and the fireworks to start.

My mom took this photo of us.  I don't really love it.  I think it makes both of us look heavier than we really are. She got close (as opposed to zooming in) and I also feel like it's shot upwards a bit.   But there you have it. . .

We didn't have any plans for the 4th.  A friend from my barn gave me some homegrown blackberries and I attempted to make a pie.   I tried this years ago and it flopped.  It was super runny and disappointing.  This time it turned out much better!

But holy sweetness!  I guess cause I don't eat much sweet stuff anymore, this was a shock.  We got some vanilla ice cream to top it with.  That helped toned down those blackberries, but my teeth were still coated in sugar.  Thanks for Carb-Ease Plus from Advocare.  I popped that before inhaling this hot mess of sugar!  :)

Yesterday I went to the barn to ride and found this:

Swollen knee from a little cut above the knee.  I opted to ride him lightly for 40 mins to see if the swelling would go down.  It didn't.  It did get warm when it wasn't before.  So maybe riding wasn't the best idea.  But Eli puffs up like a stove pipe from the most superficial cut.  So I knew that's what it was from.  I put ointment on the cut and hopefully this is better today.  He was going to give me a really sweet ride so I was bummed that I had to go easy. :(

Today is someone's birthday at the barn so I made a patriotic cake.

Now unfortunately it's Monday.  I didn't gain any weight from this crazy weekend when I got on the scale this morning. :)   WHOOP!   I leave for Canada in 3 days! Well the first stop is Detroit.   The nerves have kicked in.

Cakeway to the West

On Saturday, my husband and I went cake hunting.  That's what I call it!   There are 250 fiberglass cakes all over the St Louis metro area celebrating the 250th birthday of St Louis.   Well I think as of the last update 234 of them have been placed.   They are at places that are landmarks or some significance to St Louis.   A certain number of the locations were voted on by the public.  Of course I had no clue about that vote until well after it was over and cakes were being placed.  All the cakes have different themes, usually relating to the location they are placed.

We took photos at each cake. Here's one that was the Soldier's Memorial in downtown St Louis that was behind a locked gate.  I guess we got there after it closed.

I took Norman, the World Equestrian Games mascot with us for some photos.   Alltech is kind of asking people to take photos of Norman traveling the world.  Here's one of Norman on the St Louis Art Museum cake.

And here's one of me with a cake so you can get a feel for the size of the cake.  This one was in Forest Park and was at the location of Shakespeare in the Park.  Every spring they do a Shakespeare play for a few weeks in Forest Park.   This was probably one of my favorite cakes.

So this leads me to talk about wearing my fitbit this weekend.  We walked all over Forest Park to get all the cakes in the park.  It was easier to walk than to hope to find parking near each cake.   I was good with walking cause I was too lazy to run before we left to go cake hunting.   Here are the stats from Saturday.

Over 7 miles!  Woo hoo.  I'd say that was pretty accurate as we did a lot of walking all day.  It was fun to see these stats and I'm having fun with the fitbit.

However, the anal part of me wonders how the fitbit comes up with distance related to steps.  Based on the goals, 10,000 steps = 5 miles.  Ok.  When I go on a run and I look at my stats it's pretty dang close on mileage, so I'm good with that.  I do *not* expect this thing to be accurate.  I expect it to be relative.

So that brings me to Sunday.  Yesterday I ran 3 miles, rode Eli and then did various other things.  Here are the stats for Sunday.

Relatively speaking I walked less steps and more miles.  This was a little more skewed in the middle of the day yesterday.  There has to be some algorithm that takes in frequency of steps or something.  My guess is that riding might throw this off some, but that just a guess.  I'm not being anal enough about it to look at the stats after every single thing I do, or try to figure it out by doing certain things on certain days.  But when I do the math, Sat come out to 2193.8 steps/mile and Sun is 1952.5 steps/mile.  A difference of 241-ish steps per mile.  *shrug*  Big enough to care?  Probably not.  Definitely not for me.  I'm still having fun with the fitbit and I'm using it in a relative way.   I like wearing it and seeing how active or lazy I'm being.  It's fun on days like Saturday when we were walking so much to have an idea of how much we actually did.  For those reasons I'm keeping it. :)   However, the anal aspect of me is still somewhat bugged by the numbers that I see.  But again I think the thing is close enough and in no way to I think it's accurate to the step, to the mile or to the calorie.  I do not take those calories burned into account in my life.  Well hell, let's be honest, I don't count calories well at all or I wouldn't be this fat right now!

Happy Monday everyone!  Hope this is a great week.  I'm looking forward to a three day weekend after this week is over.  We will probably do more cake hunting and we have tickets to the Cardinals game on Memorial Day.  Yay!
